The eateries around Khor Fakkan's Old Souq mostly serve Emirati food and seafood; The Pizza Maker breaks the pattern with wood-fired pizza off a tight list of seven pies. It sits among the restaurants on the edge of Souk Sharq, the restored heritage market that houses the Traditional Crafts Museum. It's a sit-down place with a modern dining room and table service, not a takeaway counter, though it also delivers.

Our favourite is the Short Ribs Pizza: short rib meat, caramelised onion and a rib sauce under mozzarella. The classic Pepperoni, on marinara with parmesan and basil, is the other one we'd order again. Start with the Truffle Fries, triple-cooked hand-cut potatoes under truffle cream, shaved truffle and parmesan, which reached our table hot and crisp before the pizzas came out of the oven.

Pizzas run from AED 50 for a Margherita to AED 80 for the Short Ribs, Truffle and Spicy Wagyu, and the fries are AED 25. That is steep for Khor Fakkan, and anyone who doesn't want pizza has little else to pick from beyond a seafood paella and a lasagne. It holds 4.7 out of 5 across 269 Google reviews, a big following for a small-town pizzeria.

Walk the souq and the crafts museum first, then come for dinner and order the fries to share while the pizzas are in the oven.

Come if you're doing the east coast in a day and want wood-fired pizza rather than another seafood grill.
