Sallet Al Sayad has been a Palestinian-owned fish house in [Karama](https://9715.ae/dubai/area/karama/) since 2008, and it works like the fish market a stone's throw away: you pick your catch, it goes on the scale, and the kitchen cooks it your way. Come hungry. It sits in the Al Shafar building, opposite the [Dubai](https://9715.ae/dubai/) Frame.

The counter holds hamour, sea bream, red snapper, shrimp and crab, priced by the kilo. Choose your fish, have it weighed, then pick a sauce and a method: grilled, fried or steamed. Hamour runs at AED 140 a kilo and jumbo shrimp at AED 220. Ask for the hamour butterflied and grilled, which leaves it tender and moist with a light smokiness. The shrimp come grilled with spices and keep their natural sweetness. Our highlights are the Jumbo Shrimp, the Red Snapper and the Seafood Soup. Bread, salad and harissa, garlic and tahina dips arrive free, and every meal ends with fruit, cake and tea or coffee.

At 9pm on a weekend the tables are full of local families, people wait for one to clear, and the owner works the room chatting with guests. Arrive before nine on weekends. The catch is the plain room behind an unassuming front, and since everything is sold by weight, a big fish or jumbo shrimp pushes the bill up fast.
