Nabeel Nafisah started in one of the old neighbourhoods of Damascus in 1957, and the sweets it made its name on there are what fill the counters at this Barsha branch, next to [Khao Siam](https://9715.ae/dubai/khao-siam/) in [Al Barsha](https://9715.ae/dubai/area/barsha/) 1.

We've sampled plenty of what they make, and the ones we'd send you for are the signatures: the Kunafa Nabulsia and the Baklava, with a cup of coffee alongside. The kunafa layers cheese or kishta cream with kunafa dough and comes warm, the cheese melting as you eat it; the baklava comes filled with pistachio or walnut. Staff at the counter hand out samples of the different sweets freely, and the cheese kunafa is the one regulars come back for.

Almost everything is sold by weight, in 500g or 1kg portions: cheese kunafa is AED 70 a kilo and pistachio baklava AED 95. For variety, mixed selections come ready made, from a 350g tin of mixed baklava at AED 52 to a 1.5kg tray of mixed sweets at AED 165. A few cream sweets go by the piece.

Ask to taste before you commit to a kilo, and pick soft or rough kunafa; they make both. Parking is paid, on the street or in the lot, and the gift boxes add up fast: the 2kg luxury baklava box is AED 330.

Worth the stop for anyone who grew up on Damascus sweets, and don't leave without a tin of Baklava to enjoy at home.
