Istanbul Flower is a full Turkish grill, with a delicatessen counter of its own, tucked inside a supermarket: the Safeestway Shopping Centre on Sheikh Zayed Road, where it has been cooking since 2000. We have been coming back for more than ten years.

A recent renovation has given the room a fresh, more inviting feel, and plenty of seating for sit-down meals that look out towards the Burj Khalifa.

Some regulars come only for breakfast, but for most diners the draw is the shawarma and the iskender kebab: thin slices of meat laid over pieces of bread, under hot tomato sauce, melted butter and yoghurt. Our own picks are the Adana Kebab, the Mezze Platter and the Chicken Wings, and the lahmacun, a thin meat-topped pastry, is one of the most ordered things in the house. Groups can go for the Special Turkish Kebab, which comes a metre long. Finish with baklava or knafeh and a glass of Turkish tea.

Try it at breakfast, and look over the deli counter on the way out. It isn't a bargain for a restaurant beside a supermarket: expect AED 50 to 100 a head.

Worth it for a long Turkish meal with family or friends, or a late kebab on the way home along Sheikh Zayed Road.
