When we're craving authentic Mulukhia, Hadoota Masreya is where we go. Hadoota means "a story" in Egyptian Arabic, and since 2011 this family-run restaurant has been the place [Dubai](https://9715.ae/dubai/)'s Egyptians come for the cooking they grew up with.

It sits in the Matloob Building on the Sheikh Zayed Road service road in Al Safa, next to its sister restaurant Barracuda and a few doors down from Mediclinic. Park in the RTA bays along the service road. It's table service, and the waiters are quick to bring what you ask for.

We've been coming for years, and breakfast is the draw: one spread feeds two to three people. Regulars build it around the egg dishes, foul, ta'ameya and feteer.

For dinner, our picks are the Musaqaa (meat and aubergine), the Meat Kofta and Dawood Pasha (meatballs with vermicelli rice). The aubergine was cooked just right so that you could taste it, but it didn't overpower the rest of the dishes. No Egyptian meal is complete without Koshary, and theirs is the one we measure others against. Stuffed pigeon and Alexandrian liver are the other plates regulars order.

The catch is the shisha. The restaurant doubles as a shisha lounge, the smoke isn't kept away from the dining tables, and non-smokers leave smelling of coal.

Come for a long Egyptian breakfast or a family dinner of home-style classics, as long as a haze of shisha doesn't put you off.
