Fish Basket has been cooking seafood since 1988, and its whole menu works the same way: you pick your catch first and decide how it's cooked after. It sits behind Lamcy Plaza in Oud Metha, next to a Spinneys supermarket.

It's an unassuming place with a subtle sea-themed interior. You start by picking your catch, from hamour and squid to large prawns, then pick how each is cooked: grilled, battered and fried, or in a blend of spices, before it's brought to your table. Our go-to dishes are the battered calamari, the grilled jumbo prawns and the oysters in lemon sauce. Everything tasted crispy and hot. The lemon sauce tasted fresh and wasn't overpowering the fish.

Most people spend AED 50 to 100 a head, but the premium seafood adds up quickly: jumbo prawns are AED 170 and a hamour fillet AED 140, so check the price of what you pick before it goes on the grill. Regulars ask for the chef, Hassan, by name, and in Ramadan it fills up for iftar.

If you're unsure how to cook something, ask the staff: they know the menu well and will suggest the best way to cook each item.

If you're in Oud Metha and want fresh seafood cooked to order rather than from a set menu, Fish Basket is worth the stop.
