Encounter has roasted its own beans in [Dubai](https://9715.ae/dubai/) since 2016 to bring Melbourne's coffee culture here, and its café on the second level of Mall of the Emirates, off Sheikh Zayed Road, is where you drink them at the source.

The room is clean, minimal and welcoming: neutral timber, white and pastel green, surfboards on the wall as a nod to the brand's Australian roots, and shelves selling its beans. The seating suits a laptop session, with timber benches and tables in a calm, uncluttered space. It runs a full all-day kitchen too, soufflé pancakes and Turkish eggs included. The barista was very friendly and happy to point us to a few of his personal favourites, which all looked good. If you drink it black, ask which of the in-house single origins is on as a filter.

Order the Flat White. The house Voyager blend mixes Ethiopian, Brazilian and Colombian beans and tastes of milk chocolate with a hint of fruit juice, at a medium body. The Cold Brew is the other one to try, or the Honey Latte if you like it sweeter. All the croissants were good, and the Almond Croissant is the one not to miss.

The catch is price: this is a specialty roaster in a mall, and the bill reflects both. A bag of Voyager to brew at home starts at Dhs 52.

Worth the detour for shoppers who want a proper coffee, or anyone needing a quiet table to get some work done.
