On a China Cluster lane lined with look-alike restaurants signed only in Chinese, Chongqing Noodle House is a small family-run room that makes its own noodles in-house. Look for Building F15, shop 16, on the main road through the cluster in International City. Walk in and you're hit with the smell of hot noodles and rich broth, the kind that makes you hungry even if you weren't planning to eat. The space is small, with around ten tables, and it's almost always busy; the owner's mother greets everyone who comes in.

We tried the Beef Noodle Soup, the Fried Beef Noodles and the Chicken Wontons. The soup is the one to order: a rich broth with tender beef and the house-made noodles. The wontons come in a rich peanut sauce, and the fried beef noodles and wontons are what regulars go back for. Portions are generous and most people spend under AED 50 a head.

It's table service: the staff, often the owner herself, take your order and happily talk first-timers through the short menu, recommending their own favourites. Order your noodles mild unless you're used to serious heat, because the peanut and chilli base is very hot. Parking nearby is hard to find, and the room isn't wheelchair accessible.

If you want proper, no-frills Chinese noodles that deliver on flavour for little money, and don't mind a cramped room, Chongqing Noodle House is well worth the trip to International City.
