Cherryhouse does its roasting, baking and brewing in full view of the room, and the room itself is the other reason to come: everything is in the house burgundy, from the ceilings to the staff uniforms, and the attention to detail runs right through. It's in the Matloob Building on 22A Street in Al Safa 1, a sit-down café with table service, and you can take pastries away too.

We went at sunset and the place was packed; we waited about 15 minutes for a seat. The one to order is the Raspberry Finger (AED 37): fresh raspberries over house-made vanilla custard in a flaky danish, and it's the pastry regulars come back for. The plain croissant (AED 23) is made fresh each morning, with crisp, butter-layered flakes, and our flat white, made with their own roast, went well with both. Regulars go for the latte, poured with swan latte art.

From the kitchen, the Spicy Rigatoni (AED 74) comes in a gochujang sauce with burrata and chilli oil, and the Shakshouka is slow-braised peppers and tomatoes.

The catch is the price: a plain croissant is AED 23, and a meal runs AED 50 to 150 a head. To skip the wait, come later on a Friday or Saturday evening, when it stays open until midnight.

Worth the trip for anyone who takes pastry and coffee seriously and doesn't mind paying for it.
