Al Qbabh takes its name from the gubab, a local tuna, and it is a seafood house built like a fishing village: wooden cabins, string lights and a gravel courtyard on Al Amardhi Street in Al Aweer 2, and about 20 to 25 minutes' drive from central [Dubai](https://9715.ae/dubai/). The cabins are small private family rooms where you eat sitting on the floor; if that is hard on your knees, ask for regular seating indoors or out in the courtyard instead.

The waiter walked us through the menu and made thoughtful recommendations. We ordered the Hamour, the Seabream and the Shrimp, and all three were cooked well and properly seasoned. The grilled fish comes off the fire moist inside with a charred outside; ask for it butterfly style, split open and grilled flat. The Machboos, the spiced Emirati rice, was cooked perfectly too, and the rice here is fluffy and fragrant. Regulars go for the Nokhitha soup, the creamy seafood and the Machboos Hamour.

Budget around AED 100 to 150 a head. The place is usually crowded and orders can come out slowly at busy times, so arrive hungry but patient. The bigger drawback is the distance: Al Aweer is out on the edge of the city, so this is a special trip rather than an easy weeknight dinner.

For anyone who loves seafood and wants a proper Emirati sit-down meal with the family, Al Qbabh is worth the drive out.
